Queensland Maroons Team for 2016 State of Origin Game 1 Released

May 24th, 2016

The Queensland Maroons have confirmed a squad to face New South Wales in the first game of the 2016 State of Origin Series, rich with the class and proven quality of players that have all but dominated rugby league’s pinnacle for the last decade.

Debutant Coach Kevin Walters has named only two fresh-faced players in his first Queensland State of Origin team; Corey Oates (Brisbane Broncos) and Justin O’Neill (North Queensland Cowboys) to play on the wing and in the centres respectively.

Cameron Smith (Melbourne Storm) will captain the seventeen-man team from hooker; the head of a spine set to feature Cooper Cronk (Melbourne Storm) and Johnathan Thurston (North Queensland Cowboys) in the halves and Darius Boyd (Brisbane Broncos) at fullback, replacing the injured Billy Slater.

Dane Gagai (Newcastle Knights) has been selected on the other wing; gaining a position over the heavily-rumoured Kyle Feldt, while wrecking ball Greg Inglis (South Sydney Rabbitohs) completes the Maroons’ backline in the other centre position.

The ever-dangerous Matt Scott (North Queensland Cowboys) and Nate Myles (Manly Sea Eagles) will begin in the front row, while a back row of Aidan Guerra (Sydney Roosters) and Matt Gillett (Brisbane Broncos) is completed by Corey Parker (Brisbane Broncos) at lock.

Michael Morgan (North Queensland Cowboys) made a big impression on the Queensland team in Game 3 of the 2015 State of Origin series and has been retained as the utility player on a Maroons’ bench also featuring Sam Thaiday (Brisbane Broncos), Josh Papalii (Canberra Raiders) and Josh McGuire (Brisbane Broncos).

With the exception of a still well-fought loss in the 2014 series, Queensland have won every State of Origin Series since breaking a three year drought in 2006.
